Appearance Commission
The Appearance Commission focuses on maintaining the Town’s barrier island maritime forest
while balancing property owners’ rights and responsible land development.
The Commission conducts site visits for tree removal and new lot development to ensure
compliance with ordinances and approved tree densities.
Periodically, the Commission reviews and approves signage for commercial properties,
preserving the Town’s low-key coastal character. Membership is open to full-time residents only.

Board of Adjustment
The Board of Adjustment hears requests for variances from the Town’s zoning ordinance
and appeals from enforcement decisions. The Board serves in a quasi-judicial capacity
to ensure fair and consistent application of local land-use regulations.

Strategic Planning Committee
Strategic Planning is one of the most important tools a municipality can use to bring
together residents, the Board of Commissioners, and municipal staff in developing a
shared vision, direction, and goals for the community.
The Strategic Planning Committee is responsible for developing, modifying, and evaluating
the Town’s strategic goals and objectives. Membership is open to both full-time and
part-time residents.

Parks & Recreation Committee
The Parks & Recreation Committee advises and makes recommendations for all recreational
activities based on community surveys and periodically revises the Town’s Parks and
Recreation Plan.
The Committee also plans annual calendars of recreational events and coordinates related
event details. Membership is open to both full-time and part-time residents.

History Committee
The History Committee preserves significant documents, event records, themes, and ideas
on the history of Pine Knoll Shores and provides a means for the public to study,
appreciate, and view local history in order to advance public awareness of the Town’s heritage.
